In a significant financial boost to several political parties, the billionaire Oppenheimer family has contributed a total of R51 million between April and June this year, making them the largest political donors in South Africa. This donation information was disclosed by the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) as part of their first quarter report for the 2024/2025 fiscal year.
Under the requirements of the Political Funding Act, which came into effect in April 2021, political parties are obligated to declare any donations exceeding R100,000.
Despite the recent elections, the Oppenheimer family continues their financial support across the political spectrum, distributing their contributions among the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), Democratic Alliance (DA), Build One South Africa (BOSA), and ActionSA.
Another major donor this quarter was Durban-born billionaire Martin Moshal, who allocated R26.5 million between BOSA, ActionSA, and IFP.
Additionally, telecommunications giant MTN has made significant contributions to the African National Congress and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), donating over R500,000 worth of sim cards, mobile data, and wifi routers to each party.
