ANC Orders Apology from KZN Secretary Over NEHAWU Remarks

The African National Congress (ANC) has directed its KwaZulu-Natal secretary, Bheki Mtolo, to issue an apology for his “misplaced” and “overboard” comments about the National Education, Health, and Allied Workers Union (NEHAWU).

In July, Mtolo criticized NEHAWU workers during a public event, blaming them for poor service delivery at public sector facilities. He attributed the long queues and inadequate service at Home Affairs offices, clinics, and SASSA facilities to NEHAWU workers’ lack of performance.

During a media briefing on Monday afternoon, ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula announced that Mtolo had been instructed to retract his statements and apologise to the union.

“Comrade Mtolo’s remarks were unfortunate, and the platform he chose only heightened tensions rather than fostering constructive political engagement within the alliance. We have therefore resolved that Comrade Bheki Mtolo, the provincial secretary of the ANC in KwaZulu-Natal, will issue an unconditional apology to NEHAWU and retract his unfortunate remarks,” Mbalula stated.
