Ramaphosa’s State Visit to China: Strengthening Ties and Seeking Balanced Trade

President Cyril Ramaphosa is in China for a state visit to bolster South Africa’s relationship with the Asian giant. During their initial meeting on Monday, Ramaphosa highlighted that next year’s G20 Summit, hosted by South Africa, will spotlight the challenges facing Africa and the Global South.

Ramaphosa noted the need to address the trade imbalance and structure, despite increased bilateral trade. This visit marks his second state visit to China since 2018.

He expressed optimism about the procurement relationships with Chinese companies established last year and called for more sustainable investments in manufacturing and job creation.

South Africa has accepted China’s offer to enhance their strategic partnership to one of comprehensive cooperation. Ramaphosa reiterated the government’s commitment to progressive internationalism and the One-China policy.

Agreements in human settlements, agriculture, science, and technology are anticipated to be signed during this visit.
