A US city has proclaimed 3 September as Tapiwanashe Makarawu Day after the Zimbabwean sprinter’s impressive performance at the Paris Olympics in August.
The Mayor of the City of Hobbs in New Mexico, United States of America, Sam Cobb, made this proclamation on Tuesday. He presented the proclamation to Deron Clark, the Director of Athletics at New Mexico Junior College, where Makarawu was studying since 2022.

US City Proclaims 3 September As Tapiwanashe Makarawu Day
Mayor Cobb declared:
“Whereas Tapiwanashe Makarawu, known to his friends as “Carlie won 6th place in the Men’s 200 meter dash finals at the 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris, France. Although he did not win a medal, he placed sixth in the world and that is quite an accomplishment.
“He is originally from Zimbabwe, Africa, and he said of his experience at the Olympics, “It is one of those times when you want to achieve something, you’re going to have to work very hard.”
“NOW, THEREFORE, I, Sam D. Cobb, Mayor of the City of Hobbs, New Mexico, do hereby declare September 3rd, 2024 as TAPIWANASHE MAKARAWU Day in the City of Hobbs in honour of his great accomplishment of placing 6th in the world at the 2024 Summer Olympic Games.”

Makarawu expressed gratitude for the honour:
“I am proud to be a part of this wonderful community, and I am committed to continuing my efforts to make a positive impact. Thank you again for this esteemed recognition. I am deeply grateful and appreciative of your kindness. I’m humbled.”
The Zimbabwe Olympic Committee celebrated the star:
“🎉 HISTORY MADE! Tapiwanashe Makarawu Day declared in Hobbs, New Mexico! Honoring our Zimbabwean sprint star’s achievements on & off the track!“
“Carlie” joined American institution New Mexico Junior College in Hobbs, New Mexico, two years ago. He graduated this year and will be moving to the University of Kentucky in the US to study Psychology. He will also train for the NCAA Division 1 track competition at the institution.
