MPs Skeptical Over Justice Minister’s Loan Details Amid Corruption Allegations

Justice Minister Thembi Simelane is facing scrutiny from Members of Parliament regarding her loan ties with a VBS bank affiliate and her reasons for securing funds from an unregistered financial entity, Gundo Wealth Solutions. During a recent parliamentary session, Simelane attempted to clarify her financial dealings related to the purchase of a coffee shop in Sandton. However, MPs, expressing concerns about potential conflicts of interest given her oversight role in the National Prosecuting Authority, found her explanations insufficient.

The Democratic Alliance’s Glynnis Breytenbach criticized the nature of the funds as inherently questionable, highlighting the dubious origins of the money linked to VBS. Furthermore, the Freedom Front Plus’s Heloise Denner and committee chairperson Xola Nqola emphasized the absence of the actual loan agreement, suggesting that further legal consultation was needed to address these concerns comprehensively.

Amidst these political pressures, civil society groups and the opposition party ActionSA have called for deeper investigations into Simelane’s financial conduct, questioning her suitability for her ministerial role given the serious corruption allegations hanging over her.
