Econet Wireless Abruptly Terminates 10-Year Landscaping Partnership: Controversy Surrounds Decision

Econet Wireless Zimbabwe has abruptly ended its longstanding contract with Greenlands Landscaping, a company that has been servicing the telecommunications giant’s properties for over a decade.

The termination, which comes with no prior notice, has sparked concerns among insiders, with some alleging that the move may not be as transparent as it appears.

Greenlands Landscaping, which had two years remaining on its contract, was informed that its services were no longer needed due to Econet’s decision to promote women empowerment. According to sources, the company is being replaced by Prospero Investments, a firm led by Edith Gambura.

While the move has been presented as part of a drive to support women-led businesses, insiders suggest there may be other motives at play.

Allegations of Favoritism

An anonymous insider has revealed that the push to replace Greenlands Landscaping may be linked to personal relationships within Econet’s leadership. The Head of Econet’s Business Solutions (EBS) unit, Dr. Jimmy Shindi, is reportedly behind the decision to appoint Prospero Investments, allegedly because of his personal relationship with Gambura.

“Promoting women in business is commendable, but this situation is about more than that. The sudden termination, and the choice of a company like Prospero, which has no apparent experience in landscaping, raises many questions,” said the source.

A search conducted by this publication revealed that Prospero Investments has no visible online presence or proven track record in property maintenance or landscaping. The lack of a digital footprint has fueled suspicions that the company may be nothing more than a “shelf company” with little or no operational expertise.

Greenlands Left in the Dark

Speaking to the press, some Greenlands employees expressed shock and frustration over the abrupt termination of their contract with a section indicating that the decision has put them in a difficult position, both financially and operationally, as they were not given time to prepare for the loss of such a significant client.

“We’ve served Econet faithfully for 10 years, maintaining their property to the highest standards. This sudden decision, without any notice, is not only unfair but also leaves us scrambling to figure out how to survive. We still had two years left on our contract, and we strongly believe that Dr. Shindi is blocking our efforts to reach higher management,” a Greenlands employee who preffered anonymity said.

“We’re not asking for special treatment. If Econet wants to go in a new direction after our contract ends, that’s fine. But all we ask is to be allowed to finish the remaining two years of our contract. Terminating us abruptly like this, without any valid reason, is just unjust.”

Future in the Hands of Shareholders?

With allegations swirling, all eyes are now on Econet’s top leadership and shareholders to see how they will respond to the claims made by Greenlands and the questions raised about Prospero Investments.
