Fundraiser for teen bitten by police dogs

In a heartwarming show of solidarity, the villagers of Bubi, located in Matabeleland North, have started a fundraising initiative to assist a teen, Sabelo Dube, who is currently battling severe injuries after being attacked by a police dog. The incident occurred last week at a local business centre when police officers unleashed their dogs to disperse a gathering crowd.

Dube, a resident of Lukona village, was among the bystanders when police were reportedly searching for gold panners in the area following reports of a gold rush in Inyathi. Unfortunately, Dube sustained severe injuries to both his legs and hands during the attack, leaving his family in desperate need of financial help to cover his medical treatment.

Fundraising Efforts in Full Swing

Nkosilathi Ncube, a leading figure in the Bubi Community Parliament, expressed the situation’s urgency and the village’s efforts to help Dube. He shared that Sabelo’s condition is deteriorating.

Ncube also noted that behind-the-scenes discussions have been ongoing to secure the services of a private doctor, with contributions coming from across the community. He added,

“We are pooling our resources to ensure that Sabelo, along with others injured in the incident, can finally receive the medical attention they desperately need.”

Discrepancy in Police Report Adds to Family’s Challenges

Following the attack, Dube’s parents rushed him to a nearby hospital. However, the situation became more complicated when police filed an inaccurate report, stating that Dube had been injured while gold panning at a mine, which was not the case. This misreporting initially caused delays in his medical treatment. Dube’s mother confronted the police, who assured her the report would be corrected, but the amended version has yet to be submitted.

With Dube’s injuries worsening and medical costs increasing, the community felt the need to take immediate action, prompting the crowdfunding effort to gather the necessary funds.
