ANC KZN denies owing salaries to employees

The ANC in KwaZulu-Natal has refuted claims that it owes salaries to 40 parliamentary constituency administrators for two months and is closing some of its offices due to a budget shortfall.

This after a local article reported that a leaked internal report from the ANC revealed that at least two staff members in these offices were believed to be linked to the MK Party and will need to be “terminated and replaced”.

The alleged report was submitted to the ANC’s national working committee (NWC) amid a fact-finding mission by President Cyril Ramaphosa and other senior ANC officials following their electoral losses in May.

The report, considered urgent, was written by Zenzele Msomi, the ANC KZN caucus office manager.

It highlighted several problems facing the ANC caucus, including outdated signatories on bank accounts, unpaid salaries for two months, overdue rent for constituency offices, and budget cuts due to the election results.

Msomi wrote: “My report reflects on the current organogram and challenges facing our caucus administration and management.”

He listed several “challenges” faced by the caucus. These include:

• The signatories of the caucus bank accounts are still with the old MPLs, who have not been re-elected into office, and “we still depend on the old chief whip to attend to the authorization of payments and transfers”;
• The ANC caucus “owes” salaries to constituency administrators for two months (40 of them);
• The party owes rentals for these constituency offices for the past two to three months; and
• The election results have caused the ANC caucus’s budget to “drop drastically which is resulting in the non-payment of salaries and rentals, as we are unable to keep up”.

The report added: “There are two staff administrators who are allegedly MK [Party] members; [they] will need to be terminated and replaced.”

Msomi also recommended a meeting with the caucus leaders to address these issues.

It further claimed that the ANC has closed some offices, and 30 more were expected to be shut down. According to Msomi, the party was investigating the two employees and that the office closures were due to financial difficulties caused by the election losses.

Some staff salaries have reportedly been cut by 60%, but this information has not been independently verified.

However, ANC provincial secretary Bheki Mtolo told the publication that all staff members had been paid and refuted claims of branches closing down or budget cuts.
