A 60-year-old KwaZulu-Natal teacher, convicted of raping two young boys and then giving them R2 to keep quiet, has been handed a double life sentence.
Patrick Bheki Nkosi was sentenced in the Vryheid Regional Court.
According to KZN South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson, Colonel Robert Netshiunda, said in July 2019, the children were sent to the shop.
“They were aged 4 and 5 at the time. Nkosi called them to his house where he raped them. He then gave them R2 and told them not to tell anyone about what had happened,” he said.
Netshiunda said one of the boys complained about pain around his buttocks and his mother inspected him.
“The matter was reported to police who arrested the suspect. The man, who was a teacher at the school that the boys attended, remained in custody until the day of his sentencing,” Netshiunda said.
Earlier this month, the Camperdown Regional Court handed a four-term life sentence to a man found guilty of raping his stepdaughter. IOL reported that the man’s name was also added to the National Register for Sex Offenders.
Childline KwaZulu-Natal welcomed the court’s decision.
“It sets a precedent and serves as a powerful deterrent for potential offenders. While the child will need years of therapy and the abuse will have a lasting impact, justice has been served. This case sends a strong message to victims, encouraging them to come forward, knowing their voices will be heard and believed,” said Childline KZN director, Adeshini Naicker.
