Algeria’s President Tebboune Wins Reelection Bid by Landslide

Algeria’s electoral authority ANIE on Sunday declared incumbent President Abdelmadjid Tebboune the winner of the country’s latest presidential election. Tebboune secured his second five-year term with nearly 95% of the vote, defeating moderate Islamist Abdelaali Hassani and socialist Youcef Aouchiche, who received 3.17% and 2.16% of the vote, respectively. Before the election, it was clear that that Tebboune would win. Nevertheless, he had tried to boost voter turnout, especially since the 2019 election that brought him to power was marred by a record-low abstention rate of 60%. After polling ended on Saturday, ANIE announced a provisional participation rate of 48%, significantly lower than desired. However, Hassani’s campaign stated that the figure was strange and alleged there were attempts to inflate the results. The campaign also said it had recorded cases of proxy group voting.
