Former Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan has been hospitalized, according to a statement from his family.
The brief statement, issued on Tuesday evening, mentioned that Gordhan is receiving “the best available medical care” but did not provide further details about his condition.
“The family has requested privacy during this difficult time,” the statement read, adding that updates would be provided in due course.
In March, Gordhan announced his intention to retire following the May election.
Last year, Gordhan’s ill health also led to the cancellation of a scheduled meeting with Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Public Enterprises. At the time, Gordhan informed the committee that a specialist doctor had advised him against air travel.
Gordhan, a trained pharmacist and a veteran of the struggle, has had a distinguished career as a politician and activist spanning more than five decades before his retirement.
