The KwaZulu-Natal government has spent R16.8 million on vehicle rentals for its members of the executive council, according to the provincial Department of Treasury.
The department noted that if this trend continues, the expenditure could rise to R40 million annually.
Department spokesperson Nkosikhona Duma stated that MEC Francois Rodgers is now looking into ways to reduce these costs by purchasing vehicles for the MECs.
“The MEC and the team at KZN Treasury are currently exploring the option of acquiring vehicles for MECs through the transversal contract by the National Treasury,” said Duma.
Duma added that this approach could lead to significant savings for the government.
“This process would mean that the province would project to spend R12 million on the acquisition of vehicles, saving the province a projected R27 million per annum,” he explained.
