The Democratic Alliance (DA) has slammed Eskom’s proposed 36% electricity tariff increase as “outrageous and unjust.” The utility plans to implement the hike from April next year, sparking public outcry.
The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) is currently holding public hearings in Cape Town to assess the proposal. On Monday, DA members, including Western Cape Premier Alan Winde and Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis, protested outside the venue, urging NERSA to reject Eskom’s request.
Premier Winde highlighted the toll this increase would take on citizens already burdened by rising living costs. “This proposal takes food off the table of struggling families. Eskom’s failures have stifled economic growth, and now they want us to pay more for less power,” he said.
Mayor Hill-Lewis echoed the frustration, pointing to the relentless rise in electricity costs. “Eskom tariffs have surged by over 400% in the past decade. When does it end? Enough is enough,” he remarked.
The DA insists the increase would be disastrous for South Africans, further deepening the economic strain on households and businesses alike.
