US Ambassador Reuben Brigety to Depart South Africa in January 2025

US Ambassador to South Africa, Reuben Brigety, has announced his departure from office, effective 10 January 2025, as part of the standard diplomatic transition following a U.S. election.

Ambassador Brigety expressed gratitude to South Africa’s government and citizens, highlighting their warmth, partnership, and unwavering support during his two-year tenure. However, his time in South Africa was not without controversy. He faced widespread criticism after accusing the country of covertly supplying arms to Russia, a claim that strained relations and led to calls for his removal. Despite this, Brigety continued to serve, emphasizing the importance of collaboration between the two nations.

Reflecting on his tenure, Brigety described fostering the U.S.-South Africa relationship as an immense honor. He underscored achievements such as job creation, AIDS relief, educational initiatives, and cultural exchanges, facilitated through programs like the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA).

Ambassador Brigety’s departure comes in the wake of Donald Trump’s re-election as U.S. President, signaling a period of transition in U.S. diplomacy.
