Education Department Vows to Finalize 2025 Pupil Placements by November Amid Overcrowding Challenges

The national Department of Education has assured that placements for pupils entering Grades 1 and 8 in the 2025 academic year will be finalized before the end of November. However, the department acknowledges challenges in managing increasing enrollment demands and limited school capacity.

Gauteng and the Western Cape have been highlighted as the provinces most affected by overcrowding, creating additional pressure on the system.

Department spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga explained the recurring difficulties:

“Every year in January, we face challenges with spaces for learners, primarily due to late applications and unresolved admission disputes. These disputes often arise when parents and schools cannot agree on the choice of school. Despite these issues, we are committed to resolving them to ensure all learners are placed in time for the academic year.”

The department’s efforts aim to address long-standing capacity issues and streamline the admission process to avoid disruptions in the new school year.
