Gauteng Education Department Dismisses School Nutrition as Cause of Student’s Death

The Gauteng Education Department has ruled out school nutrition as the cause of death for an eight-year-old learner at Thabisile Primary School in Diepkloof, Soweto.

The grade two pupil passed away on Friday, reportedly due to a foodborne illness. However, after visiting the school on Monday, officials found no evidence of illness among other students.

Education MEC Matome Chiloane emphasized that the school’s nutrition program was not to blame. “It can’t be just one child when we are feeding the entire school,” he said. “If something were wrong with the food, at least five children would have reported symptoms, but none have. The school continues to serve meals, and our program is monitored thoroughly and inspected regularly to ensure safety.”

The department’s commitment to food safety remains firm, and no other students have shown signs of illness linked to the school’s meals.
