Bulawayo Socialite Brighton “Dash” Chipunza in Court Over A Toyota Fortuner Stolen At A Car Wash
Chronicle reported that Chipunza, 30, has been implicated through WhatsApp messages with a supposed buyer and his accomplice, Julius Chitunhu. Police recovered the car from Chitunhu’s Harare residence, where its number plates had been removed, and the chassis number was reportedly ground.
Chitunhu has already appeared in court and was granted bail of ZiG10,000. He faces trial on December 11. Police reports suggest tools, including a grinder, stencils, acid, and spray paint, were found at the scene and allegedly used to tamper with the vehicle.
The car, owned by Silibaziso Ncube, went missing on November 18 after being left at Tunnel Car Wash for cleaning.
“He then drove the vehicle to the car wash and left it with Panashe Dube, who works at the car wash. Dube cleaned the vehicle and parked it outside the car wash under a tree shed.
“He secured the vehicle by locking all the doors and windows and took the car keys with him to the car wash where he placed them on top of the hoover and continued with his daily duties,” read the document.
At around 4 PM on the same day, Ncube went to the car wash to take the vehicle and discovered that it and vanished.
“Dube, who was left cleaning the motor vehicle, stated that he saw Ncube’s vehicle leaving the premises and thought that it was being driven by her,” police documents revealed.
How Cops Found The Vehicle
Ncube reported the matter and the Vehicle Theft Squad (VTS) launched an investigation and discovered that the car wash’s CCTV cameras had been disabled.
By November 19, a South African tracking system located the stolen SUV in Harare.
“The stolen vehicle was found parked at Chitunhu’s yard with the front and rear number plates missing,” read the report.
Chipunza has faced allegations of vehicle theft before, including a stolen Ford Ranger case three years ago. He was also linked to the theft of a car belonging to a prominent businessman’s daughter last December.
