The South African Communist Party (SACP) has expressed concerns over the African National Congress (ANC)’s decision to form a Government of National Unity (GNU) with major political rivals, including the Democratic Alliance (DA) and Freedom Front Plus.
The alliance partners convened a bilateral meeting in Johannesburg on Sunday to assess their relationship following the ANC’s disappointing performance in the 2024 general elections. The GNU arrangement, seen as a strategy to stabilize governance, has been met with criticism from the SACP, which views it as undermining the achievements of South Africa’s liberation movements.
SACP spokesperson Alex Mashilo, speaking at the meeting, emphasized the need to address the implications of this political shift. “This is the first bilateral engagement since the May elections. It will reflect on the developments that have unfolded and the current conditions facing the masses,” Mashilo stated.
The SACP plans to formally convey its concerns to the ANC’s leadership, signaling potential tensions within the long-standing alliance.
