Around 200 protesters gathered outside the US Consulate in Cape Town on Friday to mark the United Nations International Day of Solidarity with Palestine. The demonstration, organized under the banner of the Anti-Apartheid Movement of South Africa, saw participants from various organizations voicing their opposition to US support for Israel.
Protesters accused the US administration of enabling Israel’s military actions by continuing to supply weapons. Advocate Shameemah Salie, a Member of Parliament for Al Jama-ah, joined representatives from the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) and the Palestine Solidarity Campaign in delivering a memorandum of demands to the US Consulate General.
Speaking outside the consulate, Salie said, “We are here to show our solidarity with the Palestinian people and to hold the US accountable. Today, we handed over a memorandum outlining our concerns and demands. However, the refusal to formally acknowledge or sign memorandums remains a significant challenge.”
In response, US Embassy deputy spokesperson Samidha Redkar reiterated America’s commitment to promoting peace in the region. “The United States continues to provide substantial humanitarian aid to those affected by the conflict, including Palestinians. We remain dedicated to supporting efforts aimed at de-escalation and fostering stability in the Middle East,” Redkar said.
The protest highlighted ongoing tensions regarding US foreign policy in the region and calls for increased accountability in its support of Israel.
