Lamola Highlights South Africa’s Shift Toward Global South in Foreign Policy Agenda

International Relations Minister Ronald Lamola has emphasized South Africa’s broadened foreign policy, which now focuses on engaging with the global South and emerging economies, alongside its longstanding ties with Western nations.

Lamola delivered these remarks on Saturday during a general meeting with the Advocates for Transformation in Johannesburg, where he addressed the country’s evolving role in promoting global recognition for the global South.

The minister noted that the end of apartheid marked a turning point in South Africa’s international relations, allowing for a more inclusive and diverse approach to global partnerships.

“Our international relations today are universal. They are unrecognizable from what prevailed during the apartheid period. Strengthening South-South relations is a highly strategic objective in the country’s foreign policy,” Lamola said.

While reaffirming the importance of continued collaboration with Western partners, Lamola underscored the growing significance of fostering ties with nations in the global South.

This shift, he explained, reflects South Africa’s commitment to addressing global inequalities and contributing to the collective advancement of emerging economies.

Lamola’s comments highlight the country’s efforts to balance traditional alliances with newer partnerships, signaling a strategic approach to navigating an increasingly multipolar world.
