Chiwenga Thrown Under The Bus
By Political Reporter- President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s allies are intensifying efforts to secure his presidency beyond 2028, further sidelining his deputy, Constantino Chiwenga, in the race for succession.
Reports indicate growing support within ZANU PF structures to extend Mnangagwa’s tenure beyond the constitutional two-term limit.
While Mnangagwa has publicly stated his intention to step down after 2028, key party affiliates have openly endorsed a push for constitutional amendments to enable his presidency until 2030.
Last weekend, ZANU PF provincial chairpersons from across the country convened at Mnangagwa’s Precabe farm in Kwekwe, reaffirming their backing for the 2030 extension resolution.
ZANU PF spokesperson Chris Mutsvangwa hailed Mnangagwa’s leadership, calling him a “rare calibre statesman.” He stated:
“The party membership works for, prays, and hopes for resonance with the electorate. Party organs are mobilising to parry aside any distractions. They are keen to see much more of the development dividend.”
This sentiment was echoed by Harare provincial chairperson Goodwills Masimirembwa, who expressed unwavering loyalty to Mnangagwa, emphasising the need for legal instruments to extend his tenure.
ZANU PF’s elective congress in 2027 will be a pivotal moment for the party, as factions continue to position themselves ahead of the harmonised elections in 2028.
Despite constitutional hurdles, the push for Mnangagwa’s extended presidency signals deepening cracks within ZANU PF’s leadership, leaving Chiwenga’s aspirations hanging in the balance.
