Former Vice President of Zimbabwe, Ambassador Phelekezela Mphoko, has passed away following a prolonged illness.

In a statement, President Emmerson Mnangagwa expressed his condolences, announcing the sad news of Mphoko’s death. He described Mphoko as a dedicated veteran of the liberation struggle, one of its early pioneers, and a courageous fighter who contributed significantly to Zimbabwe’s independence.

President Mnangagwa highlighted that the nation has lost a key figure in the liberation movement, whose role in securing national independence remains invaluable. He also noted that Mphoko’s exposure to diplomacy during the struggle laid the foundation for his distinguished diplomatic career post-independence, which included serving as Zimbabwe’s ambassador to various countries, including the Russian Federation.

The President emphasized that Mphoko’s appointment as Vice President was a well-deserved recognition of his lifelong dedication and sacrifices for the people of Zimbabwe.

After his tenure in government, President Mnangagwa acknowledged that Mphoko continued to support the ruling ZANU PF party, notably offering his unwavering backing during the 2023 General Elections.

In recognition of his exceptional service to the nation both before and after independence, the ZANU PF Politburo has unanimously declared Mphoko a National Hero.

Further details on burial arrangements will be shared in due course.
