Brentford extended their impressive home form with a thrilling 4-2 victory over Newcastle United at the Gtech Community Stadium. The win ensures that Brentford remain the Premier League’s best-performing home side, with an unbeaten record of seven wins and one draw from their eight home games this season.
In a fast-paced, entertaining encounter played amid the torrential rain of Storm Darragh, both teams delivered drama, goals, and missed opportunities, but it was Brentford who ultimately came out on top.
Brentford Home Dominance Continues
The match kicked off at a frenetic pace, with both teams having early chances. Newcastle’s Sean Longstaff came close to opening the scoring in the third minute, rattling the crossbar with a powerful 18-yard effort. However, it was Brentford who struck first. Christian Norgaard, making his 100th Premier League appearance, delivered a precise pass to Bryan Mbeumo on the right wing. The Cameroon international cut inside and saw his shot deflect off Fabian Schar and past a stationary Nick Pope to put Brentford ahead.
But just four minutes later, Newcastle responded in kind. Jacob Murphy’s speculative shot from 25 yards was headed home by Alexander Isak, who flung himself in the air to connect with the ball and draw the Magpies level.
Brentford regained the lead shortly before the half-hour mark, capitalizing on a mistake from Newcastle’s Harvey Barnes. The winger gave the ball away cheaply in his own half, allowing Yoane Wissa to seize possession, drive forward, and curl a brilliant shot past Pope from the edge of the area. Wissa’s goal was his ninth in eight league games, a remarkable run of form for the in-form striker.
Barnes, however, made amends just minutes later. Allowed too much space in the Brentford box, the English winger turned and finished low through the legs of Norgaard and past Mark Flekken at the far post to make it 2-2.
The second half began with both teams looking for a decisive breakthrough. Wissa came close to restoring Brentford’s lead early on, but his deflected shot was brilliantly saved by Pope, who turned the ball onto the post. However, Brentford’s winner arrived in the 56th minute. A long free-kick from Flekken into the Newcastle penalty area was allowed to bounce, and central defender Nathan Collins took full advantage, calmly stroking the ball past Pope to make it 3-2.
Newcastle continued to press but were unable to find a way back into the game. In the dying minutes, Brentford sealed the win when Mbeumo played a perfectly timed pass to Kevin Schade, who clipped the ball over the advancing Pope to make it 4-2 and wrap up all three points for the Bees.
The victory means Brentford have now won five consecutive home league matches for the first time since 1937, with each win seeing them score at least three goals. The Gtech Community Stadium has become a fortress for Thomas Frank’s side, who have now scored 40 goals in their eight home league games this season – the most in the Premier League.
Mbeumo, who scored his first goal in six matches, has been a key figure in Brentford’s home success, already surpassing his previous best Premier League goal tally with nine goals this season. While Brentford’s defense remains occasionally vulnerable, their attacking prowess and team spirit have been enough to continue their strong home run.
For Newcastle, the result was a painful one, as missed opportunities prevented them from taking anything from the match. Isak, who has been in excellent form with five goals and two assists in his last seven league games, could have added to his tally but wasted a glorious chance. After robbing a defender, Isak rounded Brentford keeper Flekken but took too long to finish, allowing Flekken to scramble back and parry the ball away.
In the first half, Bruno Guimarães also had a chance to put Newcastle ahead but flashed a volley wide from 25 yards, while Murphy wasted a good opportunity, heading over from six yards after a fine cross from Barnes.
The loss marks Newcastle’s first league defeat to Brentford since January 1948, leaving them stuck in mid-table. With five wins, five draws, and five losses, Eddie Howe’s side sit 12th in the Premier League, while Brentford climb to sixth, just four points off the top four.
Brentford’s home record continues to be one of the most impressive in the league, and with a solid all-around performance, they will be eyeing a potential European place this season. However, while their attacking firepower is undeniable, their defensive vulnerabilities remain a concern for Thomas Frank as the season progresses.
Newcastle, on the other hand, will need to address their inconsistency and take better advantage of the chances they create if they are to climb the table and avoid being mired in mid-table mediocrity. For now, Brentford’s Gtech Community Stadium remains the place to be for thrilling Premier League football.
