The eThekwini Metro Municipality has announced its readiness to welcome more than one million visitors to Durban for the festive season, with preparations in full swing to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all.
Speaking to journalists on Monday during a police pass-out parade, eThekwini Mayor Cyril Xaba shared insights into the city’s plans for accommodating the anticipated influx of holidaymakers.
“We are going to have restricted access into the beachfront to ensure that people who are on the beachfront have the whole promenade to themselves during this period. We are ready to receive 1.3 million,” Xaba said.
Enhanced Security Measures
To bolster security and ensure the safety of visitors, the city has recruited 567 new police officers. These officers will collaborate with the South African Police Service (SAPS) and other law enforcement agencies to maintain order and address potential challenges.
“We are working with the SAPS in this respect,” Xaba said. “They are also on alert, and this is a season where people who are on leave are going to be called back to stand shoulder to shoulder to support and ensure the city becomes what it wants to see.”
