OR Tambo airport: Operations back to normal after flight delays due to refuelling issues

Operations back to normal after flight delays due to refuelling issues at OR Tambo airport! The Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) has confirmed that operations at OR Tambo International Airport are back to normal following fuel system disruptions on Monday that caused significant flight delays.

In a statement, ACSA apologised for the inconvenience caused by the issue and advised passengers still experiencing delays to contact their airlines directly for assistance.

Cause of the Disruption

Speaking to eNCA, ACSA’s Regional General Manager, Jabulani Khambule, provided insights into the root cause of the delays.

“The breakdown was due to a valve that brings fuel into the apron for fueling aircraft. When the shaft broke down, the valve couldn’t open,” explained Khambule.

Khambule clarified that the issue was not due to a fuel shortage but a mechanical failure within the fuel farm system.

“It was just a mechanical breakdown, which we eventually managed to sort out. We are now back online and operating. We are just dealing with a backlog that has been caused by the delays,” he said.

The mechanical failure temporarily halted refueling operations, impacting several flights and leaving passengers stranded. ACSA has assured the public that the system is now fully operational, and efforts are underway to address the backlog created by the disruption.

Passengers Advised to Contact Airlines

ACSA has urged passengers to communicate directly with their respective airlines for updates regarding delayed or rescheduled flights. The swift resolution of the mechanical issue has allowed operations to resume smoothly, though some airlines may still face residual delays as they work through the backlog.

Recent Challenges for South Africa’s Aviation Industry

The fuel system breakdown comes on the heels of South African Airways (SAA) resolving a pilots’ strike that further compounded the challenges faced by the aviation sector.

Last week, members of the South African Airways Pilots Association (SAAPA) initiated industrial action over wage disputes. The strike caused disruptions to SAA’s flight schedules and led to concerns about service reliability.

However, negotiations between SAAPA and SAA Executive Management resulted in a resolution, with SAA offering an additional 1% salary increase, bringing the total increase to 9.47%.

SAA’s Response to the Strike

In a statement, SAA highlighted the importance of the agreement in resolving the standoff and its commitment to improving working conditions.

“This resolution follows successful negotiations between SAA Executive Management and the South African Airways Pilots Association (SAAPA). Management has offered an additional 1% salary increase, resulting in a total salary increase of 9.47% for SAA pilots,” said the airline.

The agreement also includes the continuation of discussions over an enterprise improvement program aimed at enhancing efficiency and productivity.

SAA’s interim Chief Executive Officer, Professor John Lamola, emphasized the airline’s commitment to fostering a supportive work environment:

“We are committed to implementing work-life concessions that should enhance the productivity of our world-acclaimed pilots.”

Resuming Normal Operations

With the strike suspended, SAA has announced that its flight schedule will resume with more than 100 pilots returning to duty. The resolution has been welcomed by passengers and industry stakeholders alike, as it ensures stability in the airline’s operations during the busy travel season.

A Challenging Period for Aviation

The mechanical failure at OR Tambo International Airport and the SAA pilots’ strike underscore the challenges facing South Africa’s aviation sector. However, both incidents have been resolved efficiently, with stakeholders prioritizing service restoration and passenger satisfaction.

ACSA’s rapid response to the fuel system issue and SAA’s resolution of the wage dispute are seen as positive steps in navigating the complexities of the aviation industry. For passengers and operators alike, these developments mark a return to normalcy, with a focus on improving service delivery and operational efficiency in the future.

Passengers affected by the disruptions are encouraged to stay informed through official channels and to remain patient as the industry works to address these challenges.
