City Power Opposes Eskom’s Proposed Electricity Tariff Increases, Urges Capping at 11%

Johannesburg’s City Power has lodged an objection with the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) over Eskom’s proposed electricity tariff hikes for 2026 to 2028, warning that a 66% cumulative increase would lead to severe economic strain on municipalities and households. Eskom’s plan, which includes a 36.15% tariff increase from April 2025, aims to raise over R1.4 trillion in revenue.

City Power condemned these proposed hikes as excessively high, noting they would worsen poverty, unemployment, and social unrest in communities still reeling from this year’s 12.75% increase. The utility proposed that tariff hikes be capped at 11% annually, which it argues balances Eskom’s financial needs with the economic realities of consumers.

Spokesperson Isaac Mangena emphasized that this submission reflects a joint stance taken by Gauteng municipalities to reject Eskom’s 36.15% increase, calling it unaffordable. City Power’s recommendations also address concerns about Eskom’s operating costs, seeking a fairer energy system that shields South Africans from unsustainable price surges.
