The Johannesburg City Council has approved a five-year Water Conservation and Demand Management Plan to address ongoing water issues. Announced during a media briefing at Joburg Water’s headquarters on Monday, the initiative aligns with National Treasury’s trading services reforms for metropolitan areas.
Key goals of the plan include repairing bulk water meters, detecting leaks, replacing aging infrastructure, and reducing water wastage by 37,000 megalitres.
Joburg Water CEO, Ntshavheni Mukwevho, shared that the city has already begun implementing elements of the plan. “All eight metros are expected to participate, but we are not all at the same stage. I can report that the City of Johannesburg is fully engaged and compliant with National Treasury’s requirements,” Mukwevho said.
This proactive approach aims to ensure a more sustainable water supply for Johannesburg, a city facing increasing pressure from aging infrastructure and growing demand.
