Mai Dhuterere in Court Over Alleged $16,000 Fraud
Harare, Zimbabwe — Dorcas Vambe, the 36-year-old wife of popular musician Mambo Dhuterere, appeared before a Harare Magistrate on Thursday facing allegations of defrauding a local politician in a botched car deal worth US$16,000.
The court heard that Vambe, in collaboration with her brother, misled the complainant into believing that they could procure a Toyota Hilux GD6 for him from Botswana. The alleged incident took place in September this year when the complainant, who was in the market for the vehicle, disclosed his budget to the accused.
According to the prosecution, Vambe and her brother assured the politician that they had the means and connections to secure the vehicle at the stated price. Trusting their claims, the complainant reportedly transferred the money to the accused. However, after receiving the funds, Vambe and her brother allegedly failed to deliver the vehicle or refund the money.
The matter came to light when the complainant, after several unsuccessful attempts to recover his money or receive the promised car, reported the incident to the authorities. Following investigations, Vambe was arrested and charged with fraud.
Vambe, who is known for her close association with her husband, gospel musician Mambo Dhuterere, has yet to enter a plea. She remains in custody pending further court proceedings.
The case has drawn significant public attention, given her connection to one of Zimbabwe’s celebrated music figures. Legal experts suggest the trial could set a precedent for similar cases involving misrepresentation and fraud.
As of now, efforts to reach Mambo Dhuterere for comment have been unsuccessful. The court is expected to determine Vambe’s fate in the coming days.
