The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have finalized their top leadership for the next five years, reaffirming Julius Malema’s position as party president.
As anticipated, Malema retained his role, continuing to lead the party he co-founded 11 years ago. The elections took place during the party’s National People’s Assembly, with the nominations officiated on Saturday night by Terry Tselane, chairperson of the Institute of Election Management Services.
The newly elected top six leaders are:
- President: Julius Malema
- Deputy President: Godrich Gardee
- National Chairperson: Nontando Nolutshungu
- Treasurer General: Omphile Maotwe
- Secretary-General: Marshall Dlamini
- Deputy Secretary-General: Leigh-Ann Mathys
Advocate Tembeka Ngcukaitobi confirmed the integrity of the nomination process. “The procedures followed were free and fair, and the election of national office bearers complies with the EFF’s constitution,” he stated.
The EFF also reinforced its commitment to gender equity, with women occupying 50% of the positions in the party’s central command team (CCT), its highest decision-making body comprising 66 members.
The spotlight, however, remained on key absences and shifts within the party. Floyd Shivambu, the former deputy president, vacated his seat after leaving the EFF to join the uMkhonto weSizwe Party. Meanwhile, the absence of EFF national spokesperson Mbuyiseni Ndlozi at the assembly sparked speculation about internal discord.
Malema dismissed concerns about Ndlozi’s absence, emphasizing that the assembly’s focus should not be reduced to any single individual.
With the new leadership team endorsed by voting delegates, the EFF remains resolute in its vision and ready to tackle the next phase of its political journey.
