Prof Mpondi Unites Zhombe Community Through Sports
By Garikai Chaunza – The Empress Mine community in Zhombe is set to come alive on December 21-22, 2024, as the Mpondi Annual Sports Tournament brings together 24 teams in an action-packed two-day event.
The brainchild of a renowned US Based Academic, Professor Douglas Mpondi, the tournament aims to scout local talent, promote social cohesion, and tackle critical social issues like child marriages and crime.
The tournament, which has become an annual event features both soccer and netball competitions, will take place at the Blue Diamond Stadium near Kamukuze Shops.
Running under the theme “No to Crime and Child Marriages,” the event seeks to create a platform where sports act as a catalyst for change in the Zhombe community, known for its vibrant yet economically challenged population.
Professor Mpondi, a respected academic and philanthropist, has long been committed to empowering rural communities.
Speaking about his motivations for sponsoring the tournament, he said:
“This initiative is not just about sports; it’s about providing opportunities for young people to showcase their skills while reinforcing positive values. By creating a sense of unity and purpose, we can steer our youth away from destructive behaviors like crime and address societal challenges such as child marriages.”
The Mpondi Soccer Tournament and Mpondi Netball Tournament will bring together teams from various parts of the Zhombe comunity creating opportunities for young athletes to be scouted for professional development.
As part of the talent-scouting initiative, Prof. Mpondi has invited Jojo Paul, the assistant coach of the newly promoted Premier Soccer League team, Kwekwe United.
Local sports enthusiasts and families are expected to flock to the stadium in support of their teams, fostering a spirit of togetherness.
Tackling Social Issues Through Sport
Child marriages remain a pressing issue in Zimbabwe, particularly in rural areas like Zhombe. By combining sports with advocacy, the tournament aims to raise awareness about the dangers of early marriages and provide alternatives for the youth. Community leaders, parents, and local influencers are expected to engage in conversations around education, empowerment, and child protection during the event.
The tournament will also provide an economic boost to the Empress Mine area, as vendors, transport operators, and local businesses benefit from increased activity.
With a growing need to nurture young talent and tackle social challenges, initiatives like the Mpondi Annual Sports Tournament reflect the power of sports to transform lives and inspire communities.
