Ramaphosa Promises Inclusion of Khoi, San, and Nama Languages in Schools

President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced that steps are underway to incorporate the Khoi, San, and Nama languages into South Africa’s school curriculum.

Speaking at the Reconciliation Day commemoration in Vredendal, Western Cape, on Monday, Ramaphosa underscored the importance of recognizing and preserving indigenous languages.

The president pointed to the adoption of the Traditional Khoi-San Leadership Act as a milestone in giving formal recognition to the Khoisan communities, who faced historical marginalization.

“This gave formal recognition to Khoisan institutions of traditional leadership,” Ramaphosa stated. “With the support of the Pan South African Language Board, we have worked to ensure that Khoi, San, and Nama languages are offered as part of the school curriculum.”

The inclusion of these languages marks a significant step in honoring South Africa’s rich cultural heritage and promoting reconciliation through inclusivity and equal recognition of all communities.
