Cardinal Brislin vows to serve Johannesburg’s Catholic community – SABC News

Cardinal Stephen Brislin has been installed as the Catholic Church Archbishop for Johannesburg earlier today.

Before this installation, Brislin previously served as the Archbishop of Cape Town for 15 years, and before that he was the Bishop of Kroonstad between 2007 and 2009.

He takes over from Archbishop Buti Tlhagale, who is retiring.

In September last year, Cardinal Brislin was elevated to the College of Cardinals by Pope Francis.

National Assembly Speaker, Thoko Didiza and Gauteng Premier, Panyaza Lesufi are some of the dignitaries who attended his installation.

Conducting the welcome, Father Marek Marciniak said, “We welcome you Stephen, Cardinal Brislin in a very special way. During this position you will take possession of Johannesburg. At the end of the Last Supper, Jesus said ‘do it to remember me’. It is befitting therefore that this celebration is celebrated by remembering the Lord Jesus and what he has done for us.”

Brislin has vowed to serve the people of Johannesburg, “With faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, and with the love of God in my heart, I accept to serve the people of God in Johannesburg. I resolve to be faithful in the church.”
