The African National Congress (ANC) National Executive Committee (NEC) is currently holding the second day of its three-day annual lekgotla at Emperor’s Palace in Kempton Park. This marks the party’s second lekgotla since the formation of the Government of National Unity (GNU).
ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula addressed the media on Saturday, staunchly defending President Cyril Ramaphosa’s decision to sign the Expropriation Act into law. His comments come in response to the Democratic Alliance (DA), which accused the president of making unilateral decisions and using the GNU to implement ANC policies.
Mbalula emphasized that the Expropriation Act, enacted on Thursday, provides a legal framework to address historical injustices. The act replaces the pre-democratic Expropriation Act of 1975 and allows for the expropriation of land in the public interest, including for land reform and socio-economic development.
“Government must prioritize the implementation of the act to unlock opportunities in agriculture, human settlements, and industrial development,” Mbalula said. “The president has noted that land reform is essential not only for justice but also for economic growth and national food security.”
He dismissed the DA’s criticism, stating that those opposing the bill could challenge it in court. Mbalula underscored the ANC’s commitment to addressing inequality and promoting inclusive development through the new legislation.
