Minister Dean Mcpherson Rejects Mashatile’s Call to Resign Over Expropriation Act Stance

Minister of Public Works Dean Mcpherson has made it clear that he does not answer to Deputy President Paul Mashatile, following Mashatile’s suggestion that Mcpherson should implement government policies or step down.

The dispute arose after Mcpherson publicly criticized President Cyril Ramaphosa’s decision to sign the Expropriation Act into law. Earlier this week, Mcpherson took to social media to voice his opposition, arguing that the legislation contains contradictions that will likely lead to legal challenges.

Speaking at a media briefing in Cape Town on Saturday, Mcpherson defended his stance, asserting that his priority is upholding the Democratic Alliance (DA)’s principles and ensuring the success of the Government of National Unity (GNU).

“I’m not a lawyer, but even I know that you can’t have contradicting sections within a law. It creates confusion for the courts and is bound to end up in litigation. An opportunity to address these issues was missed,” Mcpherson stated.

He added that he would not engage with comments designed to undermine the DA’s efforts in the GNU, signaling a firm stance on preserving the party’s influence within the coalition government.
