Democratic Alliance (DA) leader John Steenhuisen has claimed that President Cyril Ramaphosa owes his presidency to DA support during the Government of National Unity (GNU).
Speaking in Cape Town on Saturday, Steenhuisen outlined the DA’s plans to challenge the constitutionality of the recently enacted Expropriation Act. He also reiterated the party’s opposition to the implementation of the National Health Insurance (NHI).
Steenhuisen accused Ramaphosa of disregarding GNU agreements by unilaterally advancing policies rooted in the African National Congress (ANC)’s National Democratic Revolution (NDR). According to Steenhuisen, these policies have contributed to South Africa’s current challenges.
The DA leader said his party had joined the GNU to ensure shared governance, not to enable the ANC to impose its agenda.
“You don’t have 50% of the votes, which means you cannot dictate all outcomes. The DA’s role in the GNU was to share power, not to merely bolster ANC numbers,” Steenhuisen emphasized.
He further criticized Ramaphosa for enacting the NHI without responding to his letter requesting engagement on GNU-related issues. “The ANC cannot continue to implement its policies at the expense of the DA’s compromises,” Steenhuisen said.
