Charges against Louis Cason, a City of Cape Town staff member arrested during a Hawks raid at the office of Safety and Security MMC JP Smith, have been withdrawn.
The raid, which took place last Friday, also targeted the office of Energy MMC Xanthea Limberg. It was linked to an ongoing tender fraud investigation in the construction sector involving former Human Settlement MMC Malusi Booi.
Cason was arrested on suspicion of defeating the ends of justice but has since denied allegations that he attempted to destroy or hide evidence. In a statement released on Tuesday, Cason called the claims a deliberate misrepresentation of facts aimed at discrediting JP Smith.
Cason emphasized that he fully cooperated with authorities during the raid, handing over all requested electronic devices, passwords, and PINs.
“I welcome the withdrawal of the charges against me and am grateful that justice has prevailed,” he said.
The incident remains part of a broader investigation into tender fraud within the City of Cape Town.
