DA Reaffirms Commitment to GNU but Demands Greater Role in Decision-Making

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has reaffirmed its commitment to the Government of National Unity (GNU) but warned that it will no longer tolerate being sidelined by the African National Congress (ANC).

Speaking at a media briefing in Johannesburg on Tuesday, DA leader John Steenhuisen expressed frustration with the ANC and President Cyril Ramaphosa for failing to consult the DA on key legislative matters before signing bills into law.

The briefing followed the outcomes of the DA’s federal council meeting, the party’s highest decision-making body between congresses. Steenhuisen specifically pointed to the BELA and Expropriation Acts as recent examples where the DA was excluded from discussions.

“We need to make sure the DA, as the second-largest party in the GNU, is allowed to express itself, allowed to put on the table alternatives, and to work together to find consensus-making decisions within the GNU. If that is not possible, it makes future involvement in the GNU incredibly difficult to justify to our voters and the 3.5 million people who entrusted us with their votes in the last election,” Steenhuisen said.

The DA emphasized the need for collaboration and consultation, warning that the party’s continued participation in the GNU depends on whether its concerns are addressed.
