ZIFA President Nqobile Magwizi reveals more details on Michael Nees’ sacking

Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) President Nqobile Magwizi has shed more light on the dismissal of Warriors head coach Michael Nees.

Nees was relieved of his duties on Wednesday following a string of poor results. The German tactician, appointed in July 2024 on a two-year contract, struggled to produce consistent performances during his tenure despite leading Zimbabwe to AFCON qualification. He managed just two wins in sixteen matches.

As a result, ZIFA decided to terminate his contract with immediate effect.

Speaking on the sidelines of ZIFA’s Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing ceremony with the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education on Thursday, Magwizi explained that while Nees met some of his targets, the decision to part ways was also influenced by feedback from various stakeholders.

“We have various stakeholders — the fans, government, and clubs — and as the Executive Committee, we had set certain expectations that were not being met,” said Magwizi.

“There was a need for a review, and after submissions from the technical committee and wide consultations regarding our targets and progress, the decision was made.

“We are now looking forward to engaging someone new who can bring renewed energy to the team.”
