List of coaches linked to Warriors job

The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) technical committee is in the process of recruiting a new head coach for the national team, and several high-profile names have already been linked to the post.

ZIFA began the search following the dismissal of Michael Nees last week after a string of poor results. Nees was sacked just over a year into his tenure.

According to ZIFA president Nqobile Magwizi, the new coach is expected to be announced next week — either on Monday or Tuesday — as preparations intensify for the Warriors’ participation in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals, which are just over six weeks away.

Over 200 applications were submitted and among those reportedly in the running are former English Premier League managers Chris Hughton, Harry Redknapp, and Sam Allardyce.

Hughton, a former Tottenham Hotspur and Norwich City boss, has prior experience in Africa, having coached Ghana two years ago. Redknapp and Allardyce, however, have never worked on the continent.

Other names linked with the job include Egyptian coach Mohamed Fathi, a former Highlanders mentor, and Adel Amrouche, who is currently in charge of Rwanda.

German coach Winfried Schäfer, currently serving as Ghana’s technical director, is also reportedly under consideration. Schäfer was previously shortlisted for the Warriors job before the position was awarded to Nees.

Current Warriors assistant coach Kaitano Tembo has also been mentioned as a potential candidate, although he declined to comment when asked about the speculation.
