Tawanda Chirewa could be on the verge of a major English Premier League breakthrough after interim Wolverhampton Wanderers coach James Collins declared that the Zimbabwe international is ready for first-team football.
Chirewa has been featuring for the Wolves U21 side since returning from a loan spell at Huddersfield ahead of the current season.
According to Collins, who also manages the U21s, the midfielder is now prepared to step up to senior football and could be available for selection when Wolves face Chelsea on Saturday.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference, Collins said: “We might get a couple of the young boys from my group around the squad as well who are capable of being around it, and we’ll make the decision from there.
“It’s difficult as a first-team manager in the Premier League to throw kids in when you’re losing games. It’s a little bit easier for me because I come from there, I know them, I trust them. Tawanda Chirewa, Mateus Mane and Enzo Gonzalez have been with me all this season, and I think are good enough for first-team football, possibly Premier League football.”
He added: “You’ll not know until they get an opportunity, and whether tomorrow’s the right opportunity for them, who knows, but they are not far off this group. I’ve watched the first-team group all week and these players are more than capable of competing with them. Whether it’s me or whether it’s the new manager who comes in, they will add real value to the club.”
Chirewa, who was part of the Wolves matchday squad that faced Chelsea in the Carabao Cup, made eight Premier League appearances towards the end of the 2023/24 season, all as a substitute.
The 22-year-old midfielder, however, has not featured in the competition since then.
