Premier Soccer League (PSL) clubs have voted to pause relegation for this season.
This is in line with a recommendation by ZIFA to increase the number of teams in the league to 20 teams. The association stated that the proposal aims to strengthen the national football ecosystem by creating a broader platform for player development, coaching exposure, and administrative experience.
The 2026 Premier Soccer League season is then set to feature 22 teams!
The league will then be trimmed to 20 teams in 2027.
The PSL also resolved to establish a National First Division (NFD), which would serve as the immediate feeder league to the PSL.
Currently, the country’s second tier is made up of four regional Division One leagues overseen by ZIFA. The proposed NFD would merge these regional championships into a single national competition.
A statement by the League reads: “Following a proposal from the Zimbabwe Football Association to increase the number of teams participating in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) from eighteen to twenty with effect from the 2026 season and to establish a National First Division League, the Premier Soccer League convened an Extra-Ordinary General Meeting to deliberate on these matters.
“The PSL resolved to suspend relegation for the 2025 season. The League will accommodate the newly promoted teams, resulting in an expanded league of twenty-two teams for a transitional period during the 2026 season. After the conclusion of the 2026 season, the League will revert to the proposed twenty team format beginning in the 2027 season.
“In addition, the PSL proposed a phased approach to the implementation of the National First Division League with the possibilities of it being fully operational within the next three years.”
