New Zimbabwe national team coach Mario Marinica has recalled Alec Mudimu from international football retirement, bringing the defender back into the Warriors set-up ahead of the upcoming AFCON finals.
Mudimu, now 30 and currently playing for Welsh side Flint Town United, has been named in the provisional 51-man squad for the tournament.
His inclusion marks a surprise return, as he had earlier retired from international football after spending three years without receiving a call-up.
The defender now becomes the latest member of Zimbabwe’s 2021 AFCON squad to be brought back from international retirement.
The first players to be recalled were former captain Knowledge Musona and star forward Khama Billiat, who were both brought out of retirement by former coach Michael Nees. Despite returning and featuring in the qualifiers, Billiat has been dropped from the final AFCON squad.
Mudimu last played for the Warriors at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.
