Highlanders close in on appointing South African coach

Highlanders are reportedly close to appointing South African coach Thabo Senong ahead of the 2026 season.

Senong has been identified as a potential replacement for Pieter de Jongh, whose contract is set to expire at the end of this month and will not be renewed.

The experienced tactician has previously led Singida Fountain Gate in Tanzania and has also coached the Lesotho national team. He boasts a strong background in youth development, having worked within Orlando Pirates’ development structures and guided South Africa’s Under-20 national team.

Senong is expected to arrive with his assistant and an analyst, while Highlanders will appoint a second assistant coach locally.

In addition, the Bulawayo giants are set to appoint former Warriors captain Benjani Mwaruwari as technical director, a role in which he will work closely with the incoming coach as part of the club’s restructuring plans ahead of the new season.
