Zimbabwe suffered a narrow 2–1 defeat to Egypt in a tense 2025 AFCON Group B encounter, despite a spirited defensive display.
The Warriors took a shock lead against the run of play in the 20th minute when Prince Dube turned smartly inside the box and finished clinically after a pinpoint cross from Emmanuel Jalai.
Despite trailing, the Pharaohs maintained dominance, with Omar Marmoush causing all sorts of problems. However, Zimbabwe defended resolutely, with Gerald Takwara notably producing a series of crucial blocks and interceptions, while goalkeeper Washington Arubi made several fine saves to frustrate sustained Egyptian pressure.
Jonah Fabisch also impressed, winning possession in midfield and driving Zimbabwe forward until half-time.
In the second half, the Warriors remained resolute in defence, but their bubble finally burst in the 64th minute when Egypt found a way back through Marmoush’s strike.
Mohamed Salah struck late in added time to secure the win for the Pharaohs and hand Zimbabwe stoppage-time heartbreak.
The result stretched Egypt’s dominance over Zimbabwe and placed them level on points with South Africa, who beat Angola 2–1 in another Group B match played on Monday.
