Evidence Makgopa’s late strike was not enough to send South Africa through to the quarter-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after Bafana Bafana lost 2-1 to Cameroon in a Round of 16 match played on Sunday.

Makgopa struck in the 87th minute to reduce the deficit after Cameroon had taken a two-goal advantage.

The Indomitable Lions opened the scoring in the 34th minute through Stoke City man Junior Tchamadeu. They doubled the lead in the 47th minute through Bayer Leverkusen forward Christian Kofane.

The result ended South Africa’s hopes of progressing to the quarter-finals for a second successive tournament after finishing third in the 2023 edition in Ivory Coast.

Cameroon, who won the tournament in 2017, will now face hosts Morocco in the last-eight round.

Morocco progressed after beating Tanzania 1-0 earlier in the day.
