Eskom employees implicated in prepaid electricity scheme, and tax changes coming in 2026 – Newsday


Today, 5 January, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, who was recently captured by US forces, is set to appear in a New York court, facing charges of narco-terrorism and drug trafficking. 

In Gauteng, the case against five people linked to the Bekkersdal December mass killing will continue in the Westonaria Magistrate’s Court.

The incident claimed ten lives at KwaNoxolo tavern. Court proceedings will take place under strict regulations, and the media will not be allowed to film proceedings. 

In the Humansdorp Magistrate’s Court in the Eastern Cape, a childminder is expected to appear today, after a two-year-old toddler under the individual’s care was found with wounds to the body in the Tokyo Sexwale township on New Year’s Day. 

The 59-year-old suspect is facing charges of child neglect and assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm. 

The Western Cape Health and Wellness Department is currently under severe strain with an overwhelming number of admissions over the festive season. From December to 2 January, the province’s emergency centres made more than 74,300 admissions. 

In Cape Town, twenty thousand performers are set to take part in the Minstrel Klopse parade today.

This is amid ongoing legal disputes between the city and the Kaapse Klopse Karnival association, which resulted in lower attendance rates than usual for the Cape Town minstrel carnival association’s parade over the weekend.
