Northern Region Division One women’s league side, Jonah Queens, are eyeing a top-flight promotion this season.

The team finished fourth last season, despite forfeiting some games after failing to travel, and has set promotion to the Zimbabwe Women’s Premier Soccer League (ZWPSL) as its main target for the current campaign.

The club was initially formed for Johane Masowe church members in Centenary but has since expanded to include talented players from the community.

Founder Biggie ‘Madzibaba Jonah’ Musanzika told Soccer24 that football was a way to protect young girls from social problems, including early child marriages and drug abuse.

“The main aim of starting Jonah Queens was to take children away from early child marriages, drugs, and other bad influences. So the girls, after going to church on Friday, will have something to do over the weekend that keeps them busy.

“And football gave them focus, discipline, and something positive to believe in,” he said.

The club started as a social initiative and has now become a competitive outfit, climbing the ranks in just three years.

“We started as a social team in 2023, and the girls have shown commitment and talent.

“Last season we finished fourth, even though we forfeited some games after failing to travel. This season, our aim is clear; we want to make it into the elite league,” Musanzika said.

However, the club is facing a number of challenges, particularly lack of sponsorship and financial backing.

“Our biggest challenge now is resources and finances because we do not have a sponsor. We are doing everything we can, but support would make a huge difference.

“We are appealing to anyone who can help us, and with the right support, these girls can achieve more and continue to change their lives through football.”
