The Zimbabwean government, through the Ministry of Finance, has announced plans to build a new national stadium in Mt Hampden.

According to the announcement, the stadium will feature a retractable roof, potentially becoming the first venue in Africa to have such a facility.

The Ministry of Finance revealed that it has engaged Swiss engineering company Mabetex Group, which will work alongside FIFA-aligned experts on the project.

The engagement took place on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Switzerland.

In a post on X, the ministry said:
“On the sidelines of #WEF2026, Zimbabwe Treasury officials held a high-level engagement with senior executives from Mabetex Group to advance plans for a state-of-the-art National Stadium in Harare’s new administrative capital, Mount Hampden.

“This landmark project is set to redefine Zimbabwe’s sporting and cultural landscape. The meeting included Mabetex Founder and Chairman Mr Behgjet Pacolli and General Counsel Mr Korab Toplica, cementing the project’s credibility and commercial strength.

“Mabetex, a global leader behind iconic mega-infrastructure, is partnering with FIFA-aligned experts to deliver a 30-year, Treasury-light financing model that ensures sustainability and world-class standards.”

The ministry added that the proposed stadium will be a mixed-use facility catering for football, rugby and major concerts.

“The proposed stadium, with a retractable roof, will be a mixed-use global venue for international football, rugby, major concerts and large-scale events.

“A catalytic investment for urban growth, youth empowerment and national pride, unlocking talent and positioning Zimbabwe firmly on the world stage.”

The announcement comes at a time when Zimbabwe currently has no CAF- or FIFA-approved stadiums to host international football matches.
