Former Mighty Warriors captain Felistas Muzongondi says she is ready to start a new chapter after bringing an end to a professional football career that spanned over two decades
Affectionately known as Figo in football circles, Muzongondi recently received recognition from the Footballers Union of Zimbabwe (FUZ) for her immense contribution to the local game.
In an interview with Soccer24, the former Black Rhinos Queens player says,
“I am truly humbled to receive this recognition, and it’s an honor to be celebrated. I am grateful for the opportunities I have had and the people I have worked with because they all made this journey unforgettable,” she said.
Reflecting on her career, Muzongondi highlighted the persistent challenge of limited financial backing in women’s football.
“The major challenge was the lack of sponsorship in women’s football, and I just wish one day they will find sponsors,” she said.
Despite the challenges, the former skipper expressed hope that the women’s game will eventually receive the recognition it deserves.
“So far, women’s football is not getting the recognition we wish for, but we are just wishing them to be recognised,” she said.
Muzongondi, who has been doubling as a player-coach, says she has already begun her transition into life beyond playing. She has completed several professional courses, including Sport Management and Strength and Conditioning, as she prepares for a coaching career.
Looking ahead, she is keen to use her journey to inspire young players coming through the ranks.
“I would love to inspire the next generation by sharing my experience. Most importantly, I will tell them to enjoy the game,” she said.
