Black Coffee pushes for jail time as Nota Baloyi defamation battle intensifies

Black Coffee wants Nota in prison

The legal showdown between Grammy-winning DJ Black Coffee and outspoken business executive Nota Baloyi has taken a dramatic new turn, with reports indicating that the internationally acclaimed producer now wants Baloyi behind bars.

According to updates circulating on Sunday, the international DJ is seeking a 60-day prison sentence after alleging that Baloyi defied a High Court order linked to defamatory social media posts.

The dispute traces back to a December 2025 ruling in which the High Court instructed Baloyi to delete posts accusing the DJ of criminal conduct and alleged links to criminals; he was also ordered to publish a formal apology.

Instead of complying quietly, Baloyi challenged the ruling.

He filed an appeal, arguing that the court had misapplied defamation laws and infringed on his constitutional right to freedom of expression.

In court papers, he reportedly maintained that, “The case is not about defamation but an attempt to muzzle public discourse on issues that affect society.”

Baloyi did not stop there. He launched a counterclaim against Black Coffee, accusing the DJ of leveraging his wealth and influence to silence critics.

He is also said to be seeking R25,000 in damages, claiming the matter has caused distress to his mother.

For Black Coffee, however, the issue appears to centre on accountability.

The DJ is reportedly pursuing legal consequences for what he views as non-compliance with the court’s directive, arguing that ignoring such an order undermines the authority of the judiciary.

This is not Baloyi’s first brush with jail time over social media commentary.

In November 2024, he served two weeks of a 60-day sentence for contempt of court in a separate matter involving rapper K.O, after allegedly defying an order to refrain from posting claims about K.O and his brother’s alleged involvement in AKA’s murder.
